What is chutney?
Chutney is a preserved relish that originates from India. It is commonly eaten as a condiment to lots of Indian dishes. Made from a fruit, or vegetable and then blended with herbs or spices to give it flavour before being preserved in sugar or vinegar. You can also find chutney eaten with crusty bread, cold meats, and cheeses.

What makes a chutney A chutney?
What makes chutney a chutney is that it is a condiment made from a combination of fruits or vegetables mixed with spices and preserved in sugar or vinegar. When it is boiled and then simmered down it created a thick syrupy consistency. This jam-like substance is then placed, cool, into a glass container to store.
What food is commonly used in chutneys?
Commonly, chutney is made from fruit like mango or cranberry, or a vegetable like red onion, or tomato. It is then spiced to varying degrees and preserved. As you can see from this collection there are loads of options when it comes to choosing what to put in your chutney.
How long does homemade chutney last?
If fully sealed at the preservation stage, homemade chutney can last a year in a cool, dry place. Once opened, it’s recommended to be kept in the fridge and used within 4 weeks.
How to make chutney?
As you’ve seen from my red onion chutney recipe it is really easy to make chutney.
Prep work – Dice the onion and chili pepper thinly, and grate the garlic.
Cook work – Cook the onion and chili for fifteen minutes.
Add the garlic, sugar, salt, and pepper for another five minutes. Then add the balsamic vinegar and bring to a boil on high heat and stir until evaporated.
To finish – Allow it to cool before placing it in a glass jar to store.
