They are also good for your blood sugar and help reduce LDL cholesterol, thanks to the presence of soluble fiber beta-glucan. There are different kinds of oats out there. Are oatmeal cookies good for your diet?

Hit me with a loaded question, why don’t you? Yes and no. But let me elaborate. Are cookies with fat and sugar good for you? Hmm, not really and you know it! But are they fun, do they add some joy to our lives? Hells yeah! We all need a bit of a sweet treat in our lives! So, in that sense, they are good for us, aren’t they? But how to make them not wreck our diet is what we need to learn. This is why I have this handy compilation of low-calorie cookie recipes that won’t cross the 200 kcal mark. So you can eat any one of these healthy recipes for a light snack and still hit your calorie goals the rest of the day (and maybe even indulge in a high calorie vegetarian meal for dinner!). Make sure you heed the serving size, though!

Are homemade oatmeal cookies better for you?

Better than the factory-processed ones that are pumped full of trans fats and sugars, definitely. These harm us in the long (and short!) run and it is in our best interests to reduce our consumption of processed stuff. But, in my opinionit is ridiculous to say ‘never’ to any kind of food – especially the fun ones! So making them at home is the healthier alternative. You can satisfy your sweet tooth and ensure that only the best ingredients go in there and none of the E numbers and unhealthy fats that aren’t really good for you. If you are on the lookout for a healthy cookie recipe, your best bet is the homemade kind.

As, by definition, homemade cookies do not have any preservatives in them, they have a very short shelf life. This is actually a good thing, as the chemicals that help them live long on the supermarket shelves might not be doing our bodies any favor. Store them in an airtight container for no more than 3-4 days, would be my advice. But, going by what happens in my kitchen, homemade cookies rarely stick around for long anyway as they tend to disappear into resident tummies rather quickly!
