About this crisp

That juicy layer of gorgeous blueberries covered with crisp buttery oatmeal topping! And, then, baked! The whole house smells heavenly! A bowl of goodness that is loved by everyone, isn’t it? This dessert is so easy to put together. It has a perfect balance of sourness and sweetness. The bubbly blueberries, the zesty lemon and warm spices are truly made for each other. We all know that blueberries is a forever friend to lemon and cinnamon. So, these two elements in any blueberry dessert should be missed, and I mean it! And do you know the best part of this blueberry crisp recipe? It is absolutely gluten free as I have used oats and almond flour to make this delicious baked dessert. I love to add nuts to crisps, so I have used almonds here. The sliced almonds gives such a lovely crunch to the dish. And, a dash of cinnamon and cloves makes it a perfect dessert to enjoy during winters. It adds so much flavor and warmth to the dish! I love enjoying this blueberry crisp during summer as well as winters. Goes perfect with a scoop of ice-cream in summers. And, with few spoons of warm milk or cream during winters. All in all, it makes a bowl of delicious healthy goodness. You will definitely be running back to ask for more!

What is the difference between crisp dessert, cobbler and crumble?

All of the three are baked desserts! Each of them loaded with juicy fruit layer underneath, having a layer of streusel on the top of it. Crisp is a baked American dessert having a layer of juicy fruit of choice and a crispy garnish. The garnish or topping of this dessert consists of butter, flour or oats, sugar and sometimes spices. Crumble is a baked dessert from England origin and usually do not contain oats, but flour, sugar and butter! Similar to crisp dessert but still differ from it. Cobbler dessert has a topping of either thicker batter or a biscuit over fruit layer and then baked! Fruit cobblers like peach cobbler, apple cobbler and berry cobblers is a part of both, American and United Kingdom cuisine. And the good thing about these baked desserts are, they tastes heavenly! Especially, when served warm with a scoop an ice cream.

Can I use other fruits to make crisp dessert?

The answer is ‘yes’. To make fruit crisps, any juicy fruit of your choice can go in. The most favourite of mine is the crisp with any of the berries, apple crisp and peach crisp. You can choose to use plum, strawberries, apricots, cherries as well. Oh! you can use either only one fruit or a combination of mix of fruits. However, remember to use fruits that are juicy. Also, it should not take tonnes of time to cook. A note to keep in mind : Fruits like apple and peaches takes a bit of time to cook. So, slice them as thin as possible and then proceed. Further, adding handful of nuts won’t hurt at all. It will only do good, giving nutty crunch and earthy flavor to the dessert. Nuts like, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios are perfect add ons. As I love berries the most, this blueberry crisp especially has all my heart. But, sometimes, I even make berry crisps that has the mix of blackberries, raspberries and even mulberries.

Can I use frozen blueberries for this dessert?

Absolutely Yes! You can make blueberry crisp recipe using frozen as well fresh blueberries. I have used fresh ones here. Whenever the fresh blueberries are not handy for us here, then I use frozen blueberries to make it.

How to make vegan crisp?

Simple! Replace the dairy butter with vegan butter and go on ahead. Vegan butter is not that easily available here in India. But in the US, it is!  Pick any one of your choice from the supermarket or any grocery store. Vegetable shortening is another option to go ahead with. Although, not the healthy choice, but will work.
