Why You Will Love This Crisp Dessert

I’m a huge fan of dessert recipes that don’t take a lot of time or skill; this mouthwatering peach crisp is one of my favorites. The most technical aspect of this dish is stirring, and the prep only takes 15 minutes. You just can’t beat that! Peaches also happen to be one of my favorite summer fruits. They’re delicious fresh, but when they are cooked until soft and served warm? They are unbeatable (And, don’t forget to try my so delicious Peach Cobbler!) . Since peaches are the star of this dish, you can feel a little more virtuous about eating a post-dinner treat. Fruit is naturally sweet and filled with fiber, plus oats are a great source of whole grains. All that is to say that this crisp is actually pretty healthy. While this particular crisp topping includes flour, don’t feel limited. If you’re looking for a healthy gluten free peach crisp with oats, you can check out my Blueberry Crisp recipe, which has a no-flour topping. You can also easily swap in an all-purpose gluten free flour mix. This peach dessert is also customizable in other ways: switch in different kinds of fruit, opt for different nuts, or make it vegan by using a plant-based butter. That means this fruit crisp is an excellent choice for just about any gathering because everyone can enjoy it! So what are you waiting for? Meet me in the kitchen and let’s get this delicious dessert started.

Ingredients

Aside from peaches, this tasty crisp requires only pantry staples. Here is everything you’ll need for the filling:

Peaches - Peaches are the star of this crisp, but you can easily swap in another stone fruit of your choice. You can also opt to use frozen peaches if fresh aren’t in season; as an added bonus, frozen peaches are already peeled and sliced, meaning prep will be extra easy.Cornflour - Also known as cornstarch, this is a thickening agent that turns the fruit juice into a syrupy, sticky puddle. If corn isn’t part of your diet, you can replace it with powdered tapioca or arrowroot powder.Lemon Juice - I generally prefer fresh lemon juice, but in this application the bottled stuff will do just fine. Sugar - I used regular granulated sugar for this piece, but you can easily swap in brown sugar or coconut sugar instead.Vanilla Extract - While vanilla is technically optional, I love the depth of flavor that it adds to desserts. If you have it, I recommend you use it.Salt - Salt might seem like a strange addition to a dessert, but it is very important for heightening the flavors of all the ingredients. Don’t leave it out!

That wasn’t so bad, right? You’re halfway there. Here is everything you’ll need for the crispy oat topping:

Rolled Oats - I find that rolled oats (also called “old fashioned oats”) give the crisp topping the best possible texture. If you’re in a pinch, you can swap in quick oats; just note that they will not have quite the same bite.Flour - I used all-purpose flour here, but you are welcome to swap in a gluten free all purpose blend of your choice.Pecans - Chopped pecans add extra texture and butteriness to the topping, but you can easily omit them or swap them out for a different nut. Almonds and peaches play very nicely together, but walnuts should also do just fine.Brown Sugar - Brown sugar gives a caramel flavor to the topping that shouldn’t be missed. If you only have granulated sugar on hand, feel free to use molasses to make your own brown sugar.Granulated Sugar - This can easily be swapped for brown sugar, coconut sugar or fine, raw sugar instead.Butter - Using cold butter is key to make the crisp topping nice and crumbly. For a vegan alternative, simply swap in vegan butter.Cinnamon & Nutmeg - These warming spices give the crisp a super cozy feel. You can feel free to experiment with different spices if you prefer - ginger also pairs very nicely with peaches.Salt - You know this already, but salt is a key component in any dish, whether sweet or savory.

How To Make Peach Crisp

Pre-heat the oven at 350°F and grease a 9x9 baking dish. In a large bowl, add sliced peaches, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cornstarch, granulated sugar, and salt, toss everything to coat evenly. Pour the peach mixture into greased baking dish and set it aside. In a mixing bowl, add rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, grated nutmeg, salt, chopped pecan nuts and cold diced butter. Now using your fingers work on the mixture until crumbly. Sprinkle the topping evenly over peach filling in baking dish. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, set and fruit is bubbling. Remove from the oven and allow the dessert to cool for 8-10 minutes. Dish out and serve warm with vanilla ice-cream or sweetened cream.

Optional Add-Ins & Variations

This peach crisp recipe is a true delight as is, but there are plenty of ways to customize it to your needs. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Opt for a different fruit. Apples, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, apricots and plums are all excellent substitutes for peaches.Choose a different nut. Almond and peach happen to go quite well together; if you go this route, try substituting half of the vanilla extract for almond. YUM!No rolled oats? Try using quick cooking oats instead.Gluten free? Make sure your oats are certified gluten free and opt for an all purpose flour blend that you like. You can also check out my blueberry crisp recipe for a gluten free topping.Vegan? Try using plant based butter or solid coconut oil in place of the butter.

No matter how you make this yummy dessert recipe, one thing is certain - it tastes best served warm with a scoop of ice cream and a group of friends to share it with.
