Ingredients
Garlic – Fresh garlic is roasted to create savory and aromatic flavors to mix within these fluffy potatoes. There is nothing like using fresh garlic–especially for this recipe. I highly recommend using a fresh head of garlic. Potatoes – I used Russet potatoes for this recipe because they are fluffy, soft, and easy to mash once cooked. Feel free to try this recipe with Yukon Gold or waxy red potatoes. Water – Just a little bit of water is used to cover the potatoes to make sure they boil until softened.Butter – I use a good amount of unsalted butter to make sure these potatoes contain the most buttery rich flavors. Cream – Feel free to use either reduced fat or full-fat cream. Both types of cream create potatoes that are smooth, creamy, and delicious. Salt – Sea salt is all you need to make these potatoes taste as yummy as ever.
For Serving
Fresh Herbs – Serve these buttery mashed potatoes with fresh herbs like thyme, rosemary, chives, or parsley. The herbs give these potatoes even more flavor and depth.
How To Make Garlic Mashed Potatoes?
First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Roast the whole head of garlic that has had ¼-inch of the top cut off. Place the garlic cut side up on aluminum foil on a baking sheet. Pour olive oil on top of the garlic and sprinkle with salt for extra flavor. Next, wrap the garlic in foil and roast in the oven for 35 to 40 minutes until it is golden and tender to the touch. Place the peeled and diced potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water to make sure the potatoes cook perfectly. Bring the potatoes to a boil and simmer them over medium heat for about fifteen minutes or until fork tender. Be sure not to over-boil the potatoes. A fork should be able to easily pierce through the potatoes. Next, drain the potatoes with a colander, then place them back in the pot. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter and cream with some salt. Cook the ingredients on low until the butter is fully combined with the cream. Finally, squeeze the roasted garlic into the cooked potatoes. Add a little bit of the buttery cream mixture, then mash the potatoes with a potato masher or large fork. Add the remaining butter and cream mixture to the potatoes and mix with a large wooden spoon until fluffy. Be careful not to overmix the potatoes or they will not turn out good. Season the potatoes with salt and garnish with freshly chopped herbs of choice. Feel free to add more butter or cream to the potatoes.
Tools You can Use
Masher – I use a potato hand masher because it allows me to mash the potatoes to the consistency I desire–which is chunky and smooth. Potato Ricer – The potato ricer is great for smooth (zero lump) mashed potato. You can use a potato ricer for all sorts of potato recipes or other recipes like, sauces, guacamole, or for crushing cooked vegetables and fruits like pumpkin, apple, sweet potatoes etc. for pies, or purée. Hand Mixer – These potatoes are whipped until fluffy with a simple hand mixer and bowl. You can also mix these potatoes in a stand mixer if you do not have a hand mixer.
Expert Tips
Be sure to rinse, peel, and cube the potatoes into even cubes. If the potatoes are uneven, they will cook at different times. Leave the peel on the potatoes if using red skin potatoes to Steakhouse style mashed potatoes.Make sure to use cold water when starting to boil the potatoes. Do not use boiling water at first. Once the potatoes start to boil, season them with your favorite salt. Try to pierce the potatoes with a fork to see if they are done. Piercing the potatoes allows the potatoes to avoid lumps in them if they are undercooked. Be sure to drain the water well so the potatoes do not absorb all of the water. Mash the potateos while they are hot for an easier way to prepare them. Heat the butter and cream together before adding to the potatoes. Using cool butter and cream will change the temperature of the potatoes and will make them harder to mash.
Variations
Use Any Kind of Dairy - For these potatoes, use milk, half and half, sour cream, Greek yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, Parmesan Cheese, cheddar cheese, etc. There are so many options. Vegan Potatoes – Make these roasted garlic potatoes vegan by using vegan butter, dairy-free milk, plant-based oil, and veggie broth. Herbs – Top with different herbs like thyme, parsley, chives, green onions or rosemary for different flavors. You can even use sage.
