Naturally gluten-free, this fresh turmeric drink with ginger and lemon has a soothing earthy hint with a pleasantly bitter taste. Honestly, there is so much we just love about this comforting tea. A cup of hot ginger and turmeric tea not only soothes you in cold, cough, flu or in upset stomach, but will also muffle you with warmth from inside out to destress you. It is a healing tisane (herbal tea without tea leaves) with goodness of ginger, turmeric, lemon and black pepper. This herbal tea is a perfect blend of natural ingredients packed with health benefits and no added refined sugars. You can make it vegan by using Maple syrup, raw unrefined sugar or jaggery instead of honey. With many health benefits, it would not at all be surprising to know why this delicious turmeric ginger tea is a staple in Okinawa island, Japan. Ginger : An amazing herb proven to provide great benefits to respiratory and digestive system. Gingerol in ginger is great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent that is known for aiding digestion, relieving nausea, cold and cough. In this recipe, I recommend using fresh ginger; however, you can use ground ginger powder too. Turmeric : Curcumin in turmeric (studies have shown) is a powerful antioxidant with antibacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory properties. I highly recommend using fresh turmeric root to get the most benefits; but, you can definitely use turmeric powder to make this tea. Lemon : An immune booster providing plenty of Vitamin C to the body. Use freshly squeezed lemon (or lime) juice and enjoy. Black Pepper : A tiny spice with active compound piperine that helps in curcumin absorption from turmeric and aids in digestion.

How to make Ginger Turmeric Tea?

Prepping the roots: Grab fresh ginger and turmeric, clean and rinse well with water to scrape off dirt. Either slice or grate the roots, you can leave the skin or peel it off. Making Tea: In a sauce pan or a pot, add filtered water, grated turmeric, grated ginger, and freshly cracked black pepper. Mix and bring it to a boil on high heat. When it starts to boil, bring the heat down to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the tea to rest for a minute (Note: at this point you can add a teaspoon of coconut oil and mix). Serving: Add 1-2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice in a serving cup and pour the tea using strainer. Add honey/ maple syrup/ raw jaggery and a slice of lemon, and enjoy this soothing turmeric ginger tea.

Expert Tips

Ginger and Turmeric: Feel free to use sliced ginger and turmeric with the peel on for this tea recipe. Be sure, to clean and rinse both the roots very well before the use. I prefer to keep the peel and grate both the roots. Black Pepper and/or Coconut Oil: Adding either of the two or both helps in better absorption of curcumin (its benefits) from turmeric. You can also add a little bit of grass-fed butter to this tea. Pot and Gloves: As turmeric leaves its stains easily on the surfaces, so use pot that does not stain easily. Wash the equipments immediately after using to avoid turmeric stain. Also, using gloves while handling fresh turmeric prevents staining of fingers/hands.

Variations and Add-ins

Feel free to add these organic spices, herbs or dried flowers (for floral flavor) to this ginger turmeric tea recipe for that extra soothing hint:

Nettle leaves, dried or fresh Moringa, dried or fresh Mint leaves or Lemon grass Chamomile, Lavender, or Rose petals ( and even Green tea)- add any of these, cover and let it steep for 5-7 minutes. I also love to add a little bit of organic licorice root (Mulaithi) for its medicinal properties. Cinnamon, grated Nutmeg, Cloves, dried Coriander seeds or Carom seeds - add and simmer along with ginger and turmeric to make the tea.

Storage

I highly suggest you all to drink this tea as soon as you make it to reap out most of the benefits. However, if you have the leftover tea, store in a clean airtight container up-to 3 days in the fridge. Avoid adding honey if you plan to store and reheat the tea later. Reheat and add honey just before serving.
