We know that on those mornings all you wanna do is pass out again but we also know that getting some food in you can be pretty important. We all know how hangovers are caused but we’ve been looking at various different ways of trying to reduce hangovers (without drinking less of course), through the medium of food. Research has thrown up (haha) some interesting ideas but we believe this protein packed vegan sandwich is a true hangover cure.
Health Benefits – Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich
Very little scientific research has been conclusive but there are some nutrients which may help with a hangover. Sodium and potassium are involved in hydration, and both are important to help with rehydration after drinking alcohol – it’s thought that most of the symptoms of a hangover are due to dehydration. Although the evidence isn’t conclusive, cysteine, might help with a hangover too. So we tried and tested our very own vegan peanut butter sandwich/hangover cure. The banana takes care of the potassium, the peanut butter has salt in it (if it doesn’t, you can always add a pinch) and whole wheat bread contains cysteine, making this peanut butter banana sandwich the ideal choice. On top of the hangover specific benefits, this banana breakfast recipe is full of protein. As the vegans out there probably know, peanut butter is a fantastic source of protein.
Packed with protein
What you might not know is that bread can also be a good protein source! This only goes for whole grain bread, but if you choose that type of bread it will really bump up the protein levels in this vegan peanut butter and banana sandwich. So whether this is a hangover cure or not, you can thank us when you’re feeling better or at least a little stronger with some protein in you. If this recipe doesn’t work for you (although we’re pretty sure it will), check out our other hangover breakfast, this delicious baked egg dish.
Make your own
And finally – don’t forget you can always make your own PB! We’ve got a natural 2-ingredient peanut butter recipe right here – forget all that extra stuff you don’t need!
Not just a Hangover Cure!
Of course, don’t let all this talk of a hangover dissuade you from trying this delicious vegan peanut butter breakfast recipe on a normal day. And if you want more options, why not try these vegan breakfast ideas. In fact, this might be my favorite breakfast sandwich recipe ever, even on a busy weekday morning. It’s just so easy and quick to make. The only real advice you need is to remember to toss this sandwich in a pan with a little oil, once it’s all put together to make it a grilled peanut butter sandwich. The crispiness makes this basically peanut butter and banana toast, just with bread on both sides. If you want to shake things up you can add a little jam (or jelly) and make it a pb&j with banana. (Just promise us it won’t be an Elvis Sandwich, because that’s DEFINITELY not vegan).
